Wenham, Graham join 'Public Enemies' By Borys Kit
Feb 22, 2008 David Wenham and Stephen Graham have joined the cast of Universal's "Public Enemies," Michael Mann's gangster film starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.
An adaptation of Brian Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the film centers on the government's attempt to stop John Dillinger and his gang. Depp is playing Dillinger to Bale's famed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.
Wenham is playing Pete Pierpont, a member of Dillinger's crew who has a violent hostility to all authority. British actor Graham will portray Baby Face Nelson.
Also in the cast are Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Dorff.
Shooting begins in March in Chicago.
Wenham recently finished production on Baz Luhrmann's "Australia," opposite Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, for 20th Century Fox. He also appeared in the "Lord of the Rings" movies and "300." He is repped by Endeavor, Artists-Independent Management in the U.S. and Shanahan Management in Australia.
Graham ("This Is England") is repped by Kritzer Levine Wilkins Entertainment and in the U.K. by Independent Talent Group.
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis attended the 80th Annual Academy Awards tonight. Daniel Day Lewis may have taken home the gold for Best Actor this year, but we all know who the best actor really is. ;-)
They looked lovely, as always, and Vanessa's dress is gorgeous!
Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell have agreed to complete Heath Ledger's role. The film's fantasy premise, and some clever rewrites, will let the actors play a man whose appearance changes as he travels between imaginary worlds.

WALL*E-WONKA, who has contributed to AICN before, sent along a few details about what Disney has coming up in a few years. At the moment, all roads lead to early 2011.
He says the new TRON project will be presented in 3D.
CARS 2 is also being eyed for a 2011 slot, along with a third NATIONAL TREASURE film and a fourth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.
In regards to PIRATES, two dramatically conflicting assessments about how a fourth film might be approached have been making the rounds.
Some indications suggest the film's story would be far more contained than its predecessors, allowing for a budget-friendly downsizing.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's been unsubstantiated talk that a fourth film would go the other way completely...think in terms of ultra fantastical (dinosaurs, Jules Verne-esque floating fortresses, etc.) Not sure how I feel about either notion, to be honest. Not sure if I even care to see a fourth PIRATES film at all.
It's a long time before 2011 & things are likely to change a bit between now & then...so don't this info as being set in stone. For example, it might make far more sense...in many ways...to spread these projects out, presuming all of them (or only some of them) come to fruition.

Nickelodeon's 21st annual Kids' Choice Awards were held in Los Angeles on Saturday night (March 29th), and Johnny Depp won the award as Favorite Movie Actor for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. Although the film and co-star Keira Knightley were also nominated for Kids' Choice Awards, they were edged out by ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS (Favorite Film) and Jessica Alba (Favorite Movie Actress). Johnny Depp was not present at the ceremony, but AT WORLD'S END co-star Orlando Bloom was this year's guest-green-slime recipient; Orlando and host Jack Black wound up covered in the green goo, and as always the young crowd was delighted.

Johnny Depp has once again stepped behind the camera to direct--this time, it is a three-minute music video for his longtime love Vanessa Paradis. The song, called "L'Incendie" ("The Fire"), is the third single released from Vanessa's CD "Divine Idylle," which has topped the music charts in France and Belgium. Vanessa Paradis won Best French Female Artist and "Divine Idylle" won Best Pop Album at the recent Victories De La Musique awards, the French equivalent of the Grammys.
In the "L'incendie" video, Vanessa Paradis, wearing a flowing peach dress, dances and sings on the stage of an ornate, empty theater . . . a solo performance for a mysterious man in the shadows whose face is never shown. However, the man's posture and attitude, not to mention his hat, is very reminiscent of Johnny Depp. As Vanessa sings, the microphone stand bursts into flames and the stage floor ignites with her every step. At the end of the video, she walks up to the man in the hat and, in a bright explosion of fire, the pair disappear.
"L'incendie" is the third music video Johnny has directed for Vanessa; their other collaborations are "Pourtant" and "Que fait la vie?" from her previous album "Bliss."

After three days of filming the Michael Mann-directed movie PUBLIC ENEMIES around the Old Lake County Sheriff's House and Jail in Crown Point, the crew and its star, Johnny Depp, packed up and drove the fleet of trucks and trailers out of town around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, according to Crown Point police. Filming ran too late on the last evening to allow JD to meet with the crowd; still, on two of his three nights in Crown Point, he stayed behind after the day's shooting had finished and "shook hands with hundreds upon hundreds, stooping often to talk to youngsters, giving them hugs, secret pirate handshakes and signing autographs," writes local reporter Diane Krieger Spivak of the Crown Point Post-Tribune.
Adds Spivak, "He doesn't have to do it. He simply chooses to, his people said. Following behind Depp on Tuesday, his driver was addressed by a mom, who said what a nice guy Depp seemed to be. 'He's that and a whole lot more,' said his driver. 'He's a wonderful guy. I'll tell you firsthand, he's a great man.'" Supposedly no man is a hero to his valet, yet Johnny Depp is clearly a hero to his driver . . . .

Assessing Johnny Depp's second day filming John Dillinger's escape from the Lake County jail in Crown Point, Indiana, local reporter Jessica Woolf observes, "When filming wrapped for the day Tuesday, Johnny Depp might not have given his fans all they wanted--but he gave them all he had." After a long day of shooting, the actor went out in the dark to shake hands with fans who had waited behind barricades to meet him. Crown Point stargazers couldn't stop talking about how kind Johnny Depp was. "I touched Johnny Depp," said Betsy Plant, 19, of Lowell. "He shook my hand. He looked me in the eyes." Ken Nelson said, "I saw him two feet away when he came out and greeted the crowd. He was shaking hands. It was pretty cool. Most actors wouldn't do that."

"A throng of about 1,000 people came to town to see Johnny Depp on Monday," reports the Crown Point Post-Tribune, adding that Johnny "did not disappoint. Screams erupted from the crowd as Depp emerged from a white Universal Studios' trailer [. . .] and waved to the waiting crowds as a black Ford SUV picked him up and whisked him around the corner," writes reporter Diane Krieger Spivak. When the SUV was safely parked in front of the Old Lake County Sheriff's House and Jail on Main Street, where scenes detailing John Dillinger's jailbreak would be filmed for PUBLIC ENEMIES, Johnny emerged and greeted the fans, who were kept away from the set by fencing.
Spivak describes the scene: "Depp smiled and waved, put his hands together in a prayer-like gesture, offering a slight forward bow, then touched his right hand to his heart in appreciation for their adoration before heading up the Sheriff's House steps and disappearing through the doorway [. . . ] ." Fans waited 2 1/2 hours for Johnny to emerge and walk down the steps: "Depp exited the building, [. . .] this time sporting a long black overcoat, and once again smiling, waving, and again, patting his heart with his hand with a slight bow before an assistant opened a door to the SUV. Depp slipped inside, rolled down the window and waved to fans." A few seconds of contact, a smile and a wave, made the long wait in the cold worthwhile for the half-frozen bystanders. "This is the highlight of my life," sixteen-year-old Kali Norfrey told Spivak. "When I look back in life that's gonna be the last thing I see."
Fans who waited through the day to the end of filming had a special Depp moment. Seventeen-year-old Hanley Russell told another reporter, "About 7:30 or 8, we decided to stay around after everybody was off the set, and he walked down the line and touched people's hands and said 'Thanks.'" Having won every available heart in Wisconsin, the PUBLIC ENEMIES cast and crew head into Indiana for the coming week, where Depp Fever is sure to spread like wildfire. The destination? Crown Point, Indiana, population 22,697 . . . before the JD fans arrive, that is. Filming is expected to begin Monday, March 24th, at the Old Sheriff's House and County Jail on Main Street. Crown Point Mayor David Uran has signed an agreement with Universal Studios that runs from Saturday, March 22 through March 29, although PUBLIC ENEMIES publicist Dave Fulton declined to confirm filming dates "for safety and liability reasons." Fulton also has not confirmed which cast members will be present, but since John Dillinger escaped from that jail--yes, that very building--on March 3, 1934, it would not be unreasonable to expect Johnny Depp to be among the actors reporting for work in Crown Point.

One of the most insightful explanations of the frenzy that hit the Badger State while Johnny Depp was filming PUBLIC ENEMIES there appears in Kenneth Burns' reflection on the Isthmus Daily Page. "My mind was blown when I read Rod Melotte's account of the shoot earlier this week in Columbus. Melotte reports that hundreds -- hundreds -- of people had turned up at dawn on a cold Monday morning to take in the action," writes Burns. "Here's how Melotte describes one fan's reaction to a sighting of the star: 'The first time he passes, a young woman says over and over, "OH MY GOD IT WAS JOHNNY DEPP!" She borrows my cell phone to call her mom and is sobbing while telling the story of just how close she was to the actor. Sobbing!' Which is weird, and possibly an overreaction."
But maybe not--nor is the bursting-into-tears reaction limited to young women. Burns confesses that he wept through a George Jones concert five years ago, when the journalist was in his 30s and the country singer was 72. "So I identify with the young weeping woman in Columbus. Our popular entertainers can exert an awesome emotional pull on us, whether they're moaning incomparably sad country songs, as George Jones does on his records, or looking incomparably beautiful on a 30-foot-high movie screen, as Johnny Depp does, in whatever role," writes Burns. "And when we are in the actual presence of these entertainers, that emotion can't help but come out--sometimes, in tears. They're not tears of sorrow, obviously, but they're not quite tears of joy, either. They're a reaction that simply says: that isthe person who moves me. That person standing freaking right there!"
Burns confesses that he understands this phenomenon--as would, he suspects, the burly male callers to sports radio shows in Wisconsin who sobbed when quarterback Brett Favre retired. "Actually, if I'd been standing with the young weeping woman in Columbus," he concludes, "maybe I would have been weeping right along with her." As would every member of the Zone . . . .

Johnny records a message for crash victim, in hope to bring her round...
Pirates of the Caribbean superstar Johnny Depp has vowed to help a British teenage car crash victim who has spent over five months in a coma.
17 year old Sophie Wilkinson from Southampton, England, was involved in a near fatal car crash last year and has since been in a coma.
Depp is Sophie's favourite actor and her parents wrote to the Hollywood star in hope - but it is reported that the actor was touched by the sad story and will try and do as much as he can.
Depp has agreed to record a voice message for Sophie which will be played to her and has also agreed to try and visit her at Southampton General Hospital.
Sophie's father Andrew said, "We are looking for the key to wake her up, so we wrote to Johnny and he said he would do the recording in the voice of (his Pirates of the Caribbean character) Jack Sparrow.
"Only this week Sophie moved her right leg, which she has never done before. When we got home my wife and I were jumping for joy!"
That's right, you heard it here first. I first heard this rumor a few days ago when my California contact emailed and said something was brewing. Then when another person emailed me last night saying there was a strange Bette Midler sighting near Manitowish Waters it all came together.
Reports are now saying Marion Cotillard, because of the 911 her controversy, has dropped out of the movie and is being replaced with The Divine Miss M. She will be Johnny Depps new love interest.
It has also been released that with the addition of Miss M and the emergence of Johnny Depp's singing prowess, Michael Mann will be making Public Enemies into a musical.

Actor Johnny Depp turned real-life action hero on the set of his latest crime drama 'Public Enemies', after saving a group of extras from being struck down by an out-of-control car.
Depp, 44, was shooting a scene as bank robber John Dillinger when a stunt-driver in a 1933 Ford car sped onto a patch of ice and skidded towards six extras, who were standing with their backs turned, oblivious to the danger.
Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson Johnny Depp narrates the documentary Gonzo, that tells the history of Hunter S. Thompson, journalist and personal friend of Johnny.
The movie is set to be released in July 4, in limited cinemas, and just in USA. There’s no information about the movie being released outside USA.

IESB.net has learned, via an interview with director Peter Segal, that the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and “Corpse Bride” team of Tim Burton, John August and Johnny Depp are reuniting for Dark Shadows.
Burton will reportedly direct the Warner Bros. feature based on the ’60s supernatural TV show from a script by August. Johnny Depp’s Infinitum-Nihil and GK Films are producing and Depp has had interest in playing Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
According Monsters and Critics, Johnny will be presenting an award on the MTV Movie Awards show this Sunday.

“I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath Ledger as The Joker? And he says, ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath - Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘Shit, they’ve done it again!’ ” he continued.
Johnny recently described the prospect of playing The Riddler as “fun”.
“I heard about that. It seems like it’d be a fun gig for a while, yeah,” he said.

It’s not a “false report,” because Michael Caine did make the comments, but it’s false in the sense that it’s something said tongue-in-cheek that is being taken seriously. Michael Caine is joking around with the reporter, but he has a very deadpan wit, and–as is often the case with Johnny–something he said as a joke gets picked up and reported seriously in the press. (Think of all the press conferences JD has had with Tim Burton where they joke about what their next movie together will be, and those joke-projects get reported as real possibilities.)
This is not any kind of confirmation of the Riddler casting from Michael Caine; it’s quite the opposite. It’s another indication that the rumor should not be taken seriously, but some people reporting the story missed the point.

Like Beowulf, Rango will be a motion-capture film and Verbinski was quoted saying the film will use cutting-edge animation techniques that “will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature.”
It looks like the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is now on. Johnny Depp has just agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4. According to Variety, Disney has him chained to the Black Pearl for at least one more film.
Still no confirmation on what it’ll be about or even if any of the rest of the cast might return, but I suppose that doesn’t matter. As long as you have Captain Jack Sparrow, you also have a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
In addition to putting his tricorne hat back on, Depp has also agreed to a slew of other projects for Disney. He’ll also be Tonto in a Lone Ranger movie, and play the Mad Hatter in a Tim Burton take on Alice in Wonderland. Basically, Johnny Depp is on a mission to get his face on every single ride in the Magic Kingdom. All he needs to do now is grab a pair of Mickey Mouse ears and get himself drawn into a cartoon.
No word on release dates for Pirates 4 or Lone Ranger yet, but Alice in Wonderland should show up in 2010.
A business group had to pay $12,000 in relation to producing an ad that used a photograph of “Public Enemies” star Johnny Depp without permission.
The Downtown Oshkosh Business Improvement District had to reimburse the Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper and the Buyers Guide $12,000 for having to reprint Experimental Aircraft Association guides that included the ad.
District Manager Maureen Strauss said a local resident photographed Depp, but the group did not seek Universal Studios’ permission to use Depp’s image. Local officials brought it to the group’s attention after publications containing the ads had already been printed.
Earlier this year “Public Enemies” filmed in numerous Wisconsin communities, including Oshkosh.

It’s not a “false report,” because Michael Caine did make the comments, but it’s false in the sense that it’s something said tongue-in-cheek that is being taken seriously. Michael Caine is joking around with the reporter, but he has a very deadpan wit, and–as is often the case with Johnny–something he said as a joke gets picked up and reported seriously in the press. (Think of all the press conferences JD has had with Tim Burton where they joke about what their next movie together will be, and those joke-projects get reported as real possibilities.)
This is not any kind of confirmation of the Riddler casting from Michael Caine; it’s quite the opposite. It’s another indication that the rumor should not be taken seriously, but some people reporting the
story missed the point.

Johnny Depp will reprise his role of the outrageous Jack Sparrow for a fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. ( The Associated Press)
Johnny Depp has signed on to do a fourth installment of the hugely successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, the Walt Disney Co. has announced.
At a star-studded showcase on Thursday in Los Angeles, Disney also disclosed that Depp, 45, is slated to play the sidekick Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer's "The Lone Ranger" and the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland." The company didn't say when the films would be released.
The first three "Pirates" movies, starring Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, have garnered $1.62 billion in worldwide ticket sales and collectively cost $665 million to make, according to Internet Movie Database Inc. The newly announced films will make up for weakness in advertising and at Disney's theme parks, said Jason Helfstein, an analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. in New York.

Disney just can't get enough of Johnny Depp. At yesterday's Walt Disney Studios Showcase, an all-day extravaganza of film previews and casting announcements, Disney revealed not one, not two, but three new projects for Depp. Dick Cook, the studio's chairman and the event's emcee, labeled the roles the "Depp trifecta." Might as well call it the "Depp monopoly."
First up is Tim Burton's live-action/CG adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, in which Depp has been tapped to play the part of the Mad Hatter. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2010.
Then, as the USC Trojans marching band played the finale of the William Tell Overture, Depp appeared on the Kodak Theatre stage dressed in his Jack Sparrow outfit and holding the Lone Ranger's mask. With just a few words of explanation, Cook confirmed it: Depp will star in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, as well as a Lone Ranger movie in which the actor will play the title character's sidekick, Tonto.
But the day wasn't all about Depp. Also stopping by to support their upcoming projects were Jim Carrey, Nicolas Cage, Robin Williams, John Travolta, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Tim Allen, Miley Cyrus, and the cast of High School Musical 3. Plus, there was a major casting announcement involving Oprah Winfrey. All of the juicy details are after the jump.
Let's split the Disney news into three categories: animated movies, live-action movies, and Jerry Bruckheimer movies (because, really, they're their own genre anyway).

The usually tight-lipped actor has revealed he partied hard in the 90s to try and deal with his meteoric ascent to superstardom.
Depp - who was engaged to hard-partying model Kate Moss and was friends with wild Oasis rockers Liam and Noel Gallagher during the decade - is quoted as saying: "I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. I felt I could only be myself when I was alone, that I turned into some kind of novelty. The only way I could get through that time was to drink.
"I poisoned myself with alcohol for years but I've never been into drugs in the way it was sometimes made out."
Despite a string of critically-acclaimed film performances and three Academy Award nominations, Depp admits he is still insecure about his acting abilities.
He said: "I don't think of myself as being a celebrity, it's too mortifying. I have a hard time watching myself on screen and it's getting worse. I can't tell whether my work is good or not."
But one thing constantly getting better in his life is his relationship with French star Vanessa Paradis - the mother of his two children Lily-Rose and Jack.
Depp, 45, added: "Meeting Vanessa gave me proper perspective and understanding. It wasn't until then that things started to get real for me."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star had recently said, "I don't feel like I need a piece of paper that says I own her and she owns me." But the 45-year-old actor seems to have had a change of heart.

UK's The Sun reports the actor and comedian has been signed on by Christopher Nolan, with the film rumoured to be scheduled for a 2010 release.
Murphy would reprise the role played by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.
Nolan had been tight-lipped about the future of the Batman films after the death of The Dark Knight star, Heath Ledger.
A film insider told The Sun “Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion.
“Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.”
Shia LeBeouf is reportedly said to have signed up to play Robin, while Christian Bale will return as Bruce Wayne as will Michael Caine in the role of Bruce's assistant Alfred.
Rumours have suggested Rachel Weisz is in line for the Catwoman role.
Johnny was one of the presenters of Golden Globes tonight. As you can see in the picture above, he looked handsome, as ever.

Nickelodeon's 21st annual Kids' Choice Awards were held in Los Angeles on Saturday night (March 29th), and Johnny Depp won the award as Favorite Movie Actor for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END. Although the film and co-star Keira Knightley were also nominated for Kids' Choice Awards, they were edged out by ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS (Favorite Film) and Jessica Alba (Favorite Movie Actress). Johnny Depp was not present at the ceremony, but AT WORLD'S END co-star Orlando Bloom was this year's guest-green-slime recipient; Orlando and host Jack Black wound up covered in the green goo, and as always the young crowd was delighted.

Johnny Depp has once again stepped behind the camera to direct--this time, it is a three-minute music video for his longtime love Vanessa Paradis. The song, called "L'Incendie" ("The Fire"), is the third single released from Vanessa's CD "Divine Idylle," which has topped the music charts in France and Belgium. Vanessa Paradis won Best French Female Artist and "Divine Idylle" won Best Pop Album at the recent Victories De La Musique awards, the French equivalent of the Grammys.

After three days of filming the Michael Mann-directed movie PUBLIC ENEMIES around the Old Lake County Sheriff's House and Jail in Crown Point, the crew and its star, Johnny Depp, packed up and drove the fleet of trucks and trailers out of town around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, according to Crown Point police. Filming ran too late on the last evening to allow JD to meet with the crowd; still, on two of his three nights in Crown Point, he stayed behind after the day's shooting had finished and "shook hands with hundreds upon hundreds, stooping often to talk to youngsters, giving them hugs, secret pirate handshakes and signing autographs," writes local reporter Diane Krieger Spivak of the Crown Point Post-Tribune. 
Assessing Johnny Depp's second day filming John Dillinger's escape from the Lake County jail in Crown Point, Indiana, local reporter Jessica Woolf observes, "When filming wrapped for the day Tuesday, Johnny Depp might not have given his fans all they wanted--but he gave them all he had." After a long day of shooting, the actor went out in the dark to shake hands with fans who had waited behind barricades to meet him. "A throng of about 1,000 people came to town to see Johnny Depp on Monday," reports the Crown Point Post-Tribune, adding that Johnny "did not disappoint. Having won every available heart in Wisconsin, the PUBLIC ENEMIES cast and crew head into Indiana for the coming week, where Depp Fever is sure to spread like wildfire. The destination? Crown Point, Indiana, population 22,697 . . . before the JD fans arrive, that is. Filming is expected to begin Monday, March 24th, at the Old Sheriff's House and County Jail on Main Street. Crown Point Mayor David Uran has signed an agreement with Universal Studios that runs from Saturday, March 22 through March 29, although PUBLIC ENEMIES publicist Dave Fulton declined to confirm filming dates "for safety and liability reasons." Fulton also has not confirmed which cast members will be present, but since John Dillinger escaped from that jail--yes, that very building--on March 3, 1934, it would not be unreasonable to expect Johnny Depp to be among the actors reporting for work in Crown Point.
One of the most insightful explanations of the frenzy that hit the Badger State while Johnny Depp was filming PUBLIC ENEMIES there appears in Kenneth Burns' reflection on the Isthmus Daily Page. "My mind was blown when I read Rod Melotte's account of the shoot earlier this week in Columbus. Melotte reports that hundreds -- hundreds -- of people had turned up at dawn on a cold Monday morning to take in the action," writes Burns. "Here's how Melotte describes one fan's reaction to a sighting of the star: 'The first time he passes, a young woman says over and over, "OH MY GOD IT WAS JOHNNY DEPP!" She borrows my cell phone to call her mom and is sobbing while telling the story of just how close she was to the actor. Sobbing!' Which is weird, and possibly an overreaction."
